Republic "Reduced Diameter" gold 16 Pesos 1865-R, KM185, Fr-32. XF45 NGC. Only 190 pieces minted. Types as above. Definite wear in all surfaces and a somewhat dull toning but overall a worthy specimen of this rarity. A modified version of the previous coin, with rearrangement of the legends to fit in a reduced size planchet and the abbreviated obverse legend Pte (for "Presidente"). This is another extremely rare one year type, with 5 confirmed specimens by the cataloguer. Carrera's death on April 14, 1865 must have prevented further mintages of these coins, with the legend Presidente, after the mentioned initial batch of 190 pieces. Missing in the Haberthuer collection and with only three traced public appearances (including the present specimen) in the past 25 years:1) The Peltzer (Glendining's 6/1927, lot 471) - Caballero (Aureo 4/2009, lot 312 for E6,200) specimen.2) The Newcomer (J. C. Morgenthau 2/1935, lot 1935 for $235) - Clapp - Eliasberg (ANR 4/2005, lot 3049, for $18,000) specimen: graded MS-62 and the highest graded specimen. 3) The present specimen: Ex Sothebys Geneva (5/1990, lot 242).From The Isaac Rudman Collection of Guatemala Coins

Estimate: 5000-7500 USD
