Republic gold 16 Pesos 1869-R, KM188, Fr-39. AU55 NGC. 3,465 pieces minted. Types as previous. Nice reddish toning over a few handling marks, but well struck, with perfect rims and very attractive overall. By far the most available date of this type, albeit in a very scarce grade. The mintage figure appears quite low in view of the relative abundance of this date. However, many of these coins (still produced under the old Spanish monetary standard) were probably hoarded after the June 1869 decree which adopted the decimal system: at 0.875 fineness and 27.03 grams the old 16 Pesos coins had comparatively slightly more gold than the decimal 20 Pesos of 32.258 grams and 0.900 fineness. Ex. Kagin's (8/1977, lot 2856 for $1,250).From The Isaac Rudman Collection of Guatemala Coins Krause catalog price(s) for this item: $1250 in VF, $2500 in EF.
Estimate: 1250-1750 USD
