Republic gold 20 Pesos 1878-F, KM199, Fr-44, MS61 NGC. Bold strike, with much luster and minor handling marks. A minute rim nick on the reverse at 11:00 mentioned for accuracy and pedigree purposes, but a fantastic piece nonetheless. Types as previous. An extremely rare type with about 12 confirmed specimens. This is the Mortimer Hammel specimen (Stack's 9/1982, lot 849 for $12,000), and is probably more appealing overall than the Millenia specimen (also graded MS61) which we sold last year (Heritage 1/2013, lot 22086 for $25,000). Thus, it ranks among the very finer specimens of this extremely rare type (with perhaps the Haberthuer piece (SBC 1/1996, lot 2737) being another worthy candidate). As with the previous lot, the retrograde legend POST TENEBRAS LUX is clearly seen on the right sword under the scroll on the reverse. Needless to say, this piece is also worthy of the finest cabinet of Guatemalan coins. Very few collectors have been able to assemble a date set of this fabled type, making this a historical opportunity. From The Isaac Rudman Collection of Guatemala Coins
