Guatemala
Republic 1889 Paris World Fair gold Medal, Prober-unlisted. Uncirculated. 32.92gm/37mm. Obverse: Guatemala coat of arms with Quetzal bird atop a scroll, over crossed arms with wreath, with the legend "LA REPUBLICA DE GUATEMALA EN LE EXPOSICION UL (Universal) de PARIS EN 1889" around. Reverse: seated Liberty holding a flame (symbolizing Progress) on the reverse over a stone reading: "LA LUZ DEL PROGRESO CONDUSCA (sic) GUATEMALA a la GRANDEZA" (May the light of progress guide Guatemala to greatness) in 8 lines. Struck as a souvenir ("Recuerdo") at the 1889 Paris World Fair with dies engraved by Johann Baptist Frener in Guatemala, as can be seen in the legend underneath the liberty "FRENER INV Y GRAVO EN G." (Created and engraved in Guatemala by Frener). For the obverse die, he used the obverse hub of the 1889 Liberty Head 1 Peso (KM208), replaced the legend "REPUBLICA DE GUATEMALA" with the described one neatly adding the word "EN" underneath the crossed swords. Guatemala was quite successful at the 1889 Paris World Fair, obtaining 6 grand jury awards, 23 gold medals, 117 silver medals, 85 bronze medals and 83 honorable mentions, which in total ranked 3 sup rd /sup among the Latin American republics. The first specimen seen in gold by the cataloguer and doubtlessly extremely rare. One of Frener's finer engraving works and an impressive gold medal. Ex.
