Hiberno-Norse. Phase I (c.995-1020) Penny c.995-1000, Dublin mint, 24.7 grs., S-6102, MS64 PCGS. + TTLRED X RE FR • OX, bust left holding scepter / + FAZTOLO-ILFME :, short voided cross with C R V X in angles. This type is an imitation of a CRUX penny of Æthelred II and is among the earliest of the Hiberno-Norse issues. It boasts a spectacular strike despite blundered legends and some tiny annealing flaws in the planchet. The bust and cross are very well-executed for this issue. The surfaces are wonderfully preserved and bear gray and greenish toning over considerable mint luster. Very rare.

Estimate: 6500-7500 USD
