Naples. Ferdinando I of Aragon (1458-94) gold Ducat ND, Fr-819 (Insert incorrectly attributes coin to Fr-820), Biaggi-1669, MIR-64, MS61 NGC. FERDINANDVS : D : G : R : SI : V, crowned and quartered arms of Hungary, Jerusalem, Aragon, and Naples / + RE | CORDATVS : MISERICORDIE : SV, crowned juvenile bust of king right. Bright yellow-gold surfaces exhibit few signs of handling. The strike is above-average for the type with the arms and portrait particularly sharp. This type with the crown splitting the legend after "RE" is rare (listed as R2 in MIR). This issue features the second bust type of Ferdinando's ducats while the vast majority seen at auction are the later mature bust types. Ferdinando's reign was considered vicious by many amongst the nobility and more than one attempt was made to supplant his rule. Shortly after his death, his son, Alfonso II, was overthrown by Charles VIII of France. From The Formosa Collection

Estimate: 5000-6000 USD
