Papal States. Roman Senate (1350-1439) gold Ducat ND, Rome mint, Fr-2, Berman-151, Muntoni-129 var., MS63 NGC. • S • PЄTRVS | SЄnΛTOR • VRBIS •, St. Peter standing right presenting banner to kneeling senator, P in exergue / • ROMΛ • CΛPVT • M | VnDI • S • PQR • (mm), Christ standing facing, holding gospels and raising hand in benediction, surrounded by mandorla and stars. A very scarce and intriguing issue of the Roman Senate imitating a Venetian Ducat. Scattered striking weakness does little to hinder the overall design and the lustrous surfaces add tremendous visual appeal. The variety of this type is defined by a reverse line break after the "M" in "MVnDI" as well as the inclusion of the "n." Generally, this variety reads "M | VDI."
