Sicily. Pietro de Aragon & Constanza de Hohenstaufen (1282-85) gold Pierreale d'oro ND, Messina mint, Fr-654, MEC-756, Biaggi-1301, MIR-170, MS65 PCGS. + o P o DЄI o GR'A o ARAGOn o SICIL : RЄX o || + o SUMMA o POTЄnCIA o ЄS o T o In DЄO o, concentric legends around arms of Aragon, an annulet above / + COSTA • DЄI • GRA • ARAG • SICIL' RЄG || + XPS • VInCIT • XPS • RЄGnAT • XPS • IMPAT, concentric legends around uncrowned Hohenstaufen eagle. A superb example of this issue and scarce in this designation. With the exception of a couple of small portions of the outer legends, the details are sharp and boldly defined. The surfaces themselves are virtually free of marks and highly lustrous. It is posited that of the two gold Pierreale issues of Peter the Great, the uncrowned-eagle type would predate the crowned, which likely dates from the arrival of Constance on the island in April of 1283 following Peter's conquest. That would place the minting of this piece in the period ca. June 1282-April 1283.
