French Colonial - Ordinance of January 20, 1813 Countermarked "Dollar", KM9 and KM10.2. Prid-9 and Prid-10. Three cut segments to reconstruct the original "dollar" or Spanish Colonial 8 Reales piece: the left and center segments Very Fine (weighing 5.44 and 15.47 grams respectively), the right segment Extremely Fine (weighing 5.83 grams) and unusually choice. By Authorized by Ordinance of January 20, 1813. the bust Spanish 8 Reales would be divided in three separate pieces following parallel cutting lines: the center segment (which had to show the complete shield on the reverse, to prevent clipping) was valued at 6 Livres 15 Sous (or 9 Escalins), while the side segments (which had to show the complete pillar on the reverse) were valued at 2 Livres 5 Sous (or 3 Escalins). This represented a grand total of 15 Escalins for the whole dollar. This premium over the normal value (12 escalins) must have resulted in a multiplication of contemporary counterfeits. Modern fabrications also plague this interesting and legitimately rare issue. It is most unusual to find nice reconstructed "whole" dollars such as the present lot.The countermark of the center and right segments is from the same punches as the 2nd specimen in the Ralph Gordon collection (Baldwin's 10/1996, lot 107), and the 2 specimens in the Ford collection (Glendining's, 10/1989, lots 111 and 112). The one on the left segment, is from the same punch same punch as the Foerster example (Dr. Busso Peus Nachfolger 10/2007, lot 1677 for E 950). All are attractive, with the center segment showing a clear 1804 date: here is a very rare genuine countermarked 1804 dollar for your consideration!

Estimate: 3000-5000 USD
