Castile and Leon. Enrique IV (1454-74) gold Enrique de la silla ND, Seville mint, Fr-116, Cayon-1542 var., MS63 PCGS. + ЄnRICVS * QVARTVS * DЄI * GRACIA RЄX, crowned King seated facing on throne, a sword in his right hand / + ЄnRICVS * RЄX * CASTЄLLЄ * ЄT LЄGION, quartered arms of Castile-Leon in round border, an "S" at the top. A marvelously well-preserved specimen of a scarce type. The strike was precisely executed on a straight flan of good metal without flaws and remains nearly as struck, with ample remaining luster and some minor cabinet friction visible only on the highest points of the devices. The defining feature of this variety is the mintmark placement at the top of the arms. The only other example of this variety sold in the past 12 years that our research yielded was the Millennia Collection specimen (Lot 823), with a slightly different reverse legend but certified MS63 NGC, which hammered in May of 2008 for $9750.

Estimate: 7000-9000 USD
