Canada St. John's, NF- Commercial Bank of Newfoundland $20 3.1.1888 Ch.# 185-18-10 PMG Very Fine 20. Newfoundland banknotes are rare and desirable, and their history is as impressive as the notes themselves. It sometimes goes unnoticed that Newfoundland was a separate British Crown Colony, and was not unified into Canada until 1949. During the late 1800s, The Commercial Bank of Newfoundland and the Union Bank of Newfoundland issued banknotes in the colony. In 1894, the banks failed, and the economy of Newfoundland halted due to the uncertainty of the paper notes in circulation. The colonial Government in Newfoundland stamped circulating banknotes in 1894, which improved the public's confidence in their currency. This excellent example is stamped and cancelled, but retains its design elements. Extant examples of this high denomination are almost impossible to find, making this an important opportunity to acquire a desirable banknote from an uneasy time in Newfoundland's history. https://currency.ha.com/itm/world-currency/canada-st-john-s-nf-commercial-bank-of-newfoundland-20-311888-ch-185-18-10-pmg-very-fine-20/a/4039-25090.s?type=DA-DMC-CoinArchivesCurrency-WorldPaperMoney-4039-10202022 HID08706262019 © 2022 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
