Cuba Banco Espanol De La Isla De Cuba 1000 Pesos 15.5.1896 Pick 51B PMG Choice Very Fine 35. A large oval vignette of Justice at left adds to the eye appeal of this rare note. The Spanish American War ended centuries of Spanish rule in Cuba, certain Spanish interests also retreated. For example, in 1898, the Spanish Bank of the Island of Cuba closed up, rendering its banknotes unredeemable and worthless at the time. This 1000 Pesos banknote was the highest denomination of the series, and extant examples are infrequently seen today. A small serial number is seen, which confirms that only small batches of this note were likely printed and issued.
