Saint Thomas and Prince Banco Nacional Ultramarino 20,000 Reis 2.1.1897 Pick 6 PMG Extremely Fine 40. Banco Nacional Ultramarino notes destined for Angola, were the first to circulate on the Island in 1868 with overprint "S. Thome". It was only in 1891 that the nation saw its own currency introduced. The example on offer was the highest denomination for this initial issuance, and like the 10,000 Reis in the previous lot, was mostly used in commercial transactions as opposed to general, everyday payment methods. It represented an enormous sum of money, which makes the survival of this note remarkable. We are however pleased that this piece did withstand the test of time and weather conditions to make for a crowning addition to even the most advanced colonial Portuguese/Saint Thomas and Prince collection! An embossed Seal II, Lisboa ornately covers the watermark area, with a penned date and managerial signatures. Perforations are seen on either side of this boundless note where counterfoil would have once been. Low serial 000458 further demonstrates how few of these notes made their way into circulation. If it is not clear already to how rare this variety is, the fact that it is the only graded note on the PMG Census should remove any doubt at all. This could be a once in a lifetime chance to acquire this type, let alone in this superior grade! Minor rust is mentioned for accuracy. https://currency.ha.com/itm/world-currency/saint-thomas-and-prince-banco-nacional-ultramarino-20-000-reis-211897-pick-6-pmg-extremely-fine-40/a/4039-25477.s?type=DA-DMC-CoinArchivesCurrency-WorldPaperMoney-4039-10202022 HID08706262019 © 2022 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
