CARIAN ISLANDS. Rhodes. Ca. 205-190 BC. AR drachm (2.69 gm). Gorgos, magistrate. Head of Helios facing / Rose with bud to right; ΓOPΓOY above, bow-in-bow case to left. Cf. Ashton 288. cf. Ex CNG 78 (14 May 2008), lot 851; Rauch 77 (10 April 2006), lot 242.This remakable piece differs significantly from the common Rhodian drachm issue of the magistrate Gorgos in that the head of Helios is fully frontal, rather than looking slightly to the right, and that the magistrate's name is inscribed in the genitive form, rather than the usual nominative. Hoard evidence suggests this issue is related to the various pseudo-Rhodian issues associated with the Third Macedonian War.
