British Virgin Islands
British Colony - Tortola 1/8 Dollar ND (1801), KM5, Prid-4. Under type Good, countermark about Fine. Authorized by local act of February 3, 1801, the first issue of cut and countermarked coinage issued at the British Virgin Islands is much scarcer than the later ones, and can be distinguished by the stamp reading "TORTOLA" instead of "TIRTILA" for the later ones. The weight of the present piece at 2.80 grams is rather light but it is undoubtedly an original official issue, with the characteristic punch break starting appear at the "L". See lots 681 and 693 in the Patterson collection (Bonhams 7/1996) for examples where the punch has broken further.
Estimate: 400-600 USD
