Charles I "Birth of Prince Charles" silver Medal 1630, uncertain engraver (probably Nicholas Briot), Eimer-115, MI-253/34, 30 mm, plain edge, AU55 NGC, an elegant example of this scarce medal, having choice surfaces with rich gray and amber-gold iridescent toning. Highly collectible for Charles II as well, as this medal announced his birth on May 29, 1630, the first son of Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria; the boy witnessed his father's execution in 1649 when he was 18 years old, fled to the court of Louis XIV, where he grew up, and returned to England in 1660 to become King Charles II. (Obverse is upside down in the NGC slab.)
