George II Era copper Medals 1739-41, celebrating Admiral Vernon's triumphs at Porto Bella and at Cartagena (two views), Fine to VF, dark brown, interesting pieces. These are contemporary copies of official medals citing British naval activity. Chris Eimer explains as follows: Edward Vernon (1684-1757) was the commander of one of two squadrons despatched to the Spanish-American colonies. His victories at Portobello, and those at Fort Chagre and Carthagena . . . made him a popular hero. More than eighty medals, many with die varieties, commemorate Vernon's successes. Most were struck in a brass-like alloy of copper and zinc. . . ."
