Great Britain
George II Era copper "British Fishery Society" Medal 1750, by L. Koch, Eimer-629, MI-659/365, 40 mm, plain edge, MS64 BN NGC, very choice, a splendid high-relief issue portraying Frederick, Prince of Wales, on its obverse (governor of the society), while the reverse portrays fishermen near the coast, hustling barrels and nets with a trawler offshore dragging nets. The society was founded in 1749 and incorporated the next year, when this medal was created. It was one of a number of patriotic movements of the times, and this piece concerned the rivalry of British fishermen against Dutch fisheries who were taking huge quantities of herring off British coasts. Scarce and artistic, made with excellent perspective.
