Carlos III Pillar 8 Reales 1769-P, KM18, Cal-93, XF Details (Surface Hairlines) NGC. 149,600 pieces minted for both varieties of the planchet size. A multitude of not too offensive handling marks explain the assigned grade. The pillar side is decently struck and rather pleasant, while the shield side is rather soft, as can be expected for the large flan variety of the date. Indeed, it was the poor state of the mint's machinery and the mint's coining press in particular at the time that forced the change from normal planchets to noticeably smaller ones. Both varieties exist for this 1769 date, with the present being the much rarer one. Ex. Freeman Craig (5/1983, lot 140 for $1,175).From The Isaac Rudman Collection of Guatemala Coins
