Central American Republic 1/4 Real 1840-G, KM1, MS61 NGC. A rare issue that remains unlisted in the SCWC in non-overdate form with light handling that defines the grade, but a pleasing array of rainbow coloration on both sides that delivers exceptional eye-appeal. Although the NGC census shows 6 examples (versus 115 for the 1840/30 overdate), we remain skeptical of this number, as two examples certified as the plain 1840 type in the Heritage Auction Archives prove to clearly be the overdate upon further inspection. In fact, a more extensive search yields no like examples. For the numismatic researcher, the type can further be differentiated by the placement of the sun's large rays, the last of which fails to touch the third mountain top as it does on the overdate. All in all, a pleasing and extremely rare item and one that the specialist might not have the chance to own again.
