Agrippina Junior. Augusta, AD 50-59. Æ Sestertius (32mm, 26.99 g, 6h). Uncertain Balkan mint. Struck under Claudius, AD 50-54. Draped bust right / Carpentum left, drawn by two mules. RIC I 103 (Claudius); von Kaenel, Thrakien Type A. Brown patina, some metal flaws, edge split. VF.
From the S & S Collection.
Sestertii and dupondii in the name of Agrippina Junior have been found localized in the Balkan region and were most likely struck at a local mint servicing the legions guarding the border. The lack of reverse legends on both the sestertius and dupondius, specifically the S C, would be in keeping with a provincial issue not issued under the nominal authority of the Roman Senate.
