PHRYGIA, Cibyra. Time of Claudius, AD 41-54. Æ (14mm, 2.58 g, 12h). Struck circa AD 43-48. Bare head of Q. Veranius (?) right / Tetrastyle temple. RPC I 2889. Dark green-brown patina, minor earthen deposits. Near VF. Extremely rare, only three recorded in RPC, none in CoinArchives.

Quintus Veranius was a Roman general and tribune of Legio IV Scythica under Tiberius, and rose to governor of the newly created province of Lycia in AD 43. He was transferred to Britain in AD 57 and reversed the existing border policies and started expansion. He famously claimed to Nero that if he had had another two years he'd have conquered the whole of the island. Onasander, a Greek philosopher, dedicated his Strategikos, a treatise on generalship and military strategy, to Veranius.
