WESTERN BLACK SEA REGION, Uncertain. Mid-late 3rd century BC. AR Tetradrachm (29mm, 16.78 g, 12h). In the name and types of Alexander III of Macedon. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; in left field, owl standing left, head facing. Price 1320; Petac & Vilcu, Tomis 17 corr. (Price no. & control mark; O4/R5) = Black Sea Hoard 322 corr. (same) = CNG E470, lot 30 (same dies); ANS 1944.100.36046 (same dies); ANS 1948.19.997 (same dies); CNG 470, lot . Lightly toned, some horn silver. VF. Very rare, two in Pella, one in The Hague, and two others in CoinArchives.

Petac & Vilcu placed this issue, as well as an unmarked issue from the same obverse die, with a group of coins they thought may be from a mint at Dioskourias. However, this is predicated upon an erroneous reading (originally made in the Black Sea Hoard study) of the control mark on this coin as the caps of the Dioskouri (Price 1212), the control mark present on other issues they placed at the mint. However, the symbol here is clearly an owl, and the style of the obverse is significantly different from the other issues. Thus, this issue with owl, and the die linked unmarked issue, probably do not belong to this larger group.
