Geto-Dacian(?) Hybrid Imitation of Republican AR Denarius. Imitating the types of Q. Pomponius Musa(?) and C. Mamilius Limetanus, circa 60-40 BC. Laureate head of Apollo(?) to right; C behind / Ulysses standing to right, holding staff and extending hand; [C•]MAMIL downwards behind. BM 2002,0102.5133 (same obv. die, C. Poblicius Q. f. rev. type); for possible obv. prototype, cf. Crawford 410; for rev. prototype, cf. Crawford 362/1 (Mercury on obv.); cf. Davis, 'Dacian and Celtic Imitations of Republican Denarii' in The Celator Vol. 18, No. 4 (April, 2004), pp. 6-15, Class A Group III (Geto-Dacian Hybrids) and Class D Group Ia (Anomalous). 2.96g, 18mm, 9h.

Near Very Fine.

From the collection of Z.P., Austria.

This example is obverse die-linked to a specimen in the British Museum with a reverse which imitates that of a C. Poblicius Q. f. denarius. The BM specimen is reverse die-linked to one published by Davis in the Celator (see references, fig. 20), with a left facing head of Roma on the obverse. This mismatch of obverse and reverse dies is typical of the hybrid series Davies attributes to the Geto-Dacians (Class A Group III) however the specimen die linked to the coin in the BM is classified as anomalous.
