Brazil
Selections from the Eric P. Newman Collection of World Coins. Joao V gold 20000 Reis 1726-M, KM117, MS62 NGC. A powerfully struck example of this grand Portuguese Colonial type with fully rendered detail within the crown's beading and bold separation in the dentils on both sides. Very attractive as far as these come with delicate graces of orange-gold tone around the devices and an even lustrous appearance. Light handling, nearly imperceptible to the naked eye, defines the grade. Among the largest gold coins ever struck for circulation, with over 1.5 ounces of pure gold, it is a real testament to the wealth generated out of Brazil in the early 18th century.
