Probus (276-282 AD) Antoninian, Ticinum - Heroic bust - ex. Philippe Gysen

Very rare and highly desirable heroic bust with aegis (Greek: αιγίς aigís 'goatskin', Latin: aegis) - in Greek mythology, the shield of the god Zeus and goddess Athena made from the skin of the goat Amalthea. RIC V.2 misinterprets aegis for 'square shield').

Obverse: VIRTVS PROBI AVG

Radiate, heroically nude bust left, holding spear and aegis, seen from the back.

Reverse: PAX AVG / VXXT

Pax standing left, holding olive-branch and long sceptre.

Bilon, diameter 20 mm, weight 4,36 g.

Bardzo rzadkie i poszukiwane heroiczne popiersie z włócznią i egidą (gr. αιγίς aigís 'kozia skóra', łac. aegis) – w mitologii greckiej tarcza boga Zeusa i bogini Ateny zrobiona ze skóry kozy Amaltei).RIC V.2; błędnie opisuje egidę jako 'kwadratową tarczę'). Jeden z zaledwie kilku znanych egzemplarzy!
