The site where Abila once stood is now located in the north of the Kingdom of Jordan. Its name is derived from the Semitic word Abel (in Hebrew, "meadow" and in Arabic, "green growth"), probably referring to the fertility of the region. The town is attributed to the Decapolis on account of an inscription found in Tayibeh (near Palmyra).
