Mn. Fonteius, 108-107 BC. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.92 g, 12 h), Rome. Laureate and jugate heads of the Dioscuri to right. Rev. (MN) · FON(TE)I Galley to right; below, A. Babelon (Fonteia) 7. Crawford 307/1a. Sydenham 566b. Lightly toned and attractive. Good very fine.
From the collection of a Nobleman who died in 1940.
The galley on the reverse of this attractive denarius of Mn. Fonteius is seen from the perspective of the front, as if it were about to pass to the right. Both "eyes" at the stern are visible, as are the oars on the far side of the ship. It is a very interesting design, and probably unique in the annals of Roman coinage.
