John III Ducas (Vatatzes), emperor of Nicaea, 1222-1254. Hyperpyron (Gold, 29.5 mm, 4.32 g, 6 h), Magnesia, 1232-1254(?). IC - XC Christ, bearded and nimbate, seated facing on throne without back, raising right hand in benediction and holding Gospels in left; to left, cross. Rev. Iω ΔΕCΠOTH Tω (Iω) - ΠOPΦVΡΟΓΗΕΝΝΙΤω / (MHP) - ΘV John standing facing, holding labarum in right hand and akakia in left, being crowned by the Virgin Mary. DOC 4c. SB 2073. Scratches and graffiti along rims, otherwise, good very fine.
