John III Ducas (Vatatzes), emperor of Nicaea, 1222-1254. Hyperpyron (Gold, 29 mm, 4.34 g, 6 h), Magnesia, 1232-1254(?). IC - XC Christ, bearded and nimbate, seated facing on throne without back, raising right hand in benediction and holding Gospels in left. Rev. Iω ΔΕCΠOTH Tω (Iω) - ΠOPΦVΡΟΓΗΕΝΝΙΤω / (MHP) - ΘV John standing facing, holding labarum in right hand and akakia in left, being crowned by the Virgin Mary. DOC 4a. SB 2073. A few minor scratches on the edges, otherwise, good very fine.
