Syria 1.8.1942 P-48 PMG Very Fine 20 NET 100 Livres
The highest denomination of a Bon de Caisse emergency issue from Syria, which was printed in Palestine. Like the two lower denominations of this emergency issue most of these (which was the highest denomination in circulation at the time) were redeemed and survivors are rare in any grade. Virtually all of the very limited number of pieces we have seen have been repaired or are in such low-grade that they are essentially fillers that few collectors would ever hope to improve. While the design is fairly simple and straight forward (these were rushed as money shortages loomed as a result of World War II) the importance of this issue for Syria's economy during this time is not to be underestimated, as it provided Syria with circulating banknotes of this denomination. The first we have handled and one of the key types printed in Palestine as well as one of the rare WWII emergency issues from the region. Carefully executed repairs have enhanced the appearance of this type and its colors remain bright with no major distractions noted, making this a rare opportunity for the Middle Eastern specialist not to be missed. PMG mentions "Repaired; annotation".
