Security of Britain, AR Medal, 1689, by P. H. Müller, GVILIELMVS ET MARIA REX ET REGINA BRITANNIAE, conjoined and draped busts right, William III with laureate and armoured, rev. AUREA FLORIGERIS SUCCRESCUNTPOMA ROSETIS •, Britannia, holding a cross, scales, cornucopia and staff with the cap of Liberty, seated left, upon a rock under the shadow of a united rose and orange tree, amid whose branches is a crown, and tramples upon emblems of tyranny and anarchy, SECURITAS BRITAN NIAE RESTITUIA • 1689 • in exergue in three lines, * EXTERNO MALE PRESSA IUGO BRITANNIA PRIDEM, IN PRISCAS ITERUM RESPIRAT LIBERA LEGES• * •(FK)• on edge, 56mm, 56.56g (Eimer 313; MI 681/60; van Loon III, 383; Harding 14 this medal), small metal flaw to reverse legend at 9 o'clock and hairline flaw running through Britannia, otherwise with pleasing brilliant surfaces and cabinet toning, all relief detail most handsomely struck-up, good extremely fine and very rare.
This medal was issued to celebrate the state of Britain after the Coronation of William and Mary. The reverse shows Britannia seated on a rock overhung by entwined rose and orange trees which are emblematic of England and Holland. The items held by Britannia symbolise the Protestant religion, justice, plenty and freedom from Catholic oppression.
