During the battle, when William's troops were in danger of being overpowered, Marshal Schomberg, who had kept a strong force in reserve in case of any emergency, threw his force against James' army, again turning the battle in William's favour. Unfortunately the Marshal was carried away amongst a group of James' cavalry and then shot by his own troops who were unaware that their commander had been entangled with the fugitives. Schomberg was a German soldier of fortune who had enjoyed a successful career on the Continent. Muller's decision to depict the Marshal in almost full face portrait, was an unusual feature in the late seventeenth century when regal profiles were more in vogue.
Estimate: £700 - £900
