SERVANDUM SERVATUS on a band, William and his suite in an open boat near the shore at ORANIE POLD•, a horseman approaching it; fleet at a distance, DIE TOT : NOCTEQ : IN SCHAP : FLUCT : APPUL : IN HOLL : D • 31 IAN : 1691 • in exergue in three lines, plain edge, 50mm, 47.67g (Eimer 333; MI ii 12/174; van Loon IV 33), some very faint hairlines to reverse field, nevertheless with an attractive flashy-brilliance, richly toned in hues of electric blue, a handsome example struck with rich and intricate detail, practically as struck and extremely rare, only two traced by this cataloguer on CoinArchives.
In February 1691, William returned to The Hague in triumph as a result of his success at the battle of the Boyne the previous year which was widely acclaimed. He real purpose of his visit, however, was to lead and attend the Congress of the Allies, a conference which was called to determine the best way of resisting the power of France which had become dominant both on land and at sea. It was attended by the representatives of England and Holland and by many princes of the German states.
