Peace of Ryswick, AR Medal, 1697, by P. H. Müller, Nuremberg, SIC REDIT ALMA QUIES •, Mars seated, before him Peace holding up a trophy composed of implements of husbandry, with a tablet inscribed PAX RYSWIC 1697, rev. * COELO DEMITTITUR ALTO *, a caduceus, with olive branch twisted around it, resting on a globe marked EUROPA; above, the name Jehovah, in Hebrew, PAX UNA TRIUMPHIS INNUMERIS POTIOR • on edge, 45mm, 35.26g (Eimer -; MI ii 162/433; van Loon IV, 266), small bruise to edge at 3 o'clock, otherwise with a most attractive lustre and flashy cabinet toning, the high relief areas intricately detailed and handsome in hand, almost as struck and rare.
As far as England was concerned there were two main provisions to the treaty: Louis XIV was to recognise William III as King of England and refrain from giving assistance to James. The Jacobites had made strenuous efforts to gain representations at the Treaty negotiations but were ignored by the Allies and rejected by Louis. It was, however, to be an uneasy and short lived peace, and war was to erupt again after just five years when Louis XIV cynically reneged on the conditions of the Ryswick Treaty.
Estimate: £600 - £800
