Treaty of Ryswick and State of Britain, Gilt AR Medal, 1697, by J. Croker, GVLIELMVS • III • DEI • GRA : MAG : BR : FRA : ET : HIB : REX :•, laureate, armoured and draped bust right, rev. RESTITVTORI •, Britannia seated, holds her trident and shield; beside her, an olive-branch resting upon a book, BRITANNIA :• MDCXCVII • in exergue in two lines, plain edge, 70mm, 104.70g (Eimer 372; MI ii 192/499; van Loon IV, 250; Harding 31 this medal), a handful of nailmarks, as well as a bruise and cut to the edge, otherwise the gilt surfaces still intact, lightly toned and with some brilliance, extremely fine and extremely rare in gilt silver.
As far as England was concerned there were two main provisions to the treaty: Louis XIV was to recognise William III as King of England and refrain from giving assistance to James. The Jacobites had made strenuous efforts to gain representations at the Treaty negotiations but were ignored by the Allies and rejected by Louis. It was, however, to be an uneasy and short lived peace, and war was to erupt again after just five years when Louis XIV cynically reneged on the conditions of the Ryswick Treaty. This medal was the first produced by John Croker after being appointed Assistant Engraver at the Mint in 1697.
Estimate: £2000 - £2500
