MARIS IMPERIVM ASSERT • PORTV GIBRALTAR CAPTO • CLASSE GALL • FVGATA •, Neptune rising from the sea presents crown and trident to Britannia who holds a small figure of Victory, GALLICA NVNC LVPATIS TEMPERET ORA FRAENIS HORAT •, on edge, signed by F. Kleinert, 44mm, 29.45g (Eimer –; MI ii, 269/69; van Loon IV, 454/2), some nailmarks to obverse and two bruises to edge, otherwise with an attractive lustre to dark grey surfaces, toned, extremely fine and rare.
This medal is one of the series issued by Kleinert. The victories alluded to are those of Schellenberg and Blenheim, by which Germany was preserved from the French; and the capture of Gibraltar and the fight of Malaga, by which the British control of the seas was confirmed.
