EXPECTAT VINDICI LAETA SE SVBIICIT •, Barcelona kneeling, presents a mural crown to Charles, habited as a Roman Emperor; Victory crowns him with a laurel and Plenty descends with her cornucopia; the city beyond, BARCELONA D • 14 • OCT • 1705 •, in exergue in two lines, RES POSCIT OPEM ET CONSPIRAT AMICE •, on edge, 43mm, 29.33g (Eimer -; MI ii 278/83; van Loon V, 19; Harding 36 this medal), hairline scratch and a few light contact marks to the obverse field, die flaw through the reverse legend at 11 o'clock, otherwise with an attractive flashy lustre and toning in hues of blue and ochre, extremely fine, rare and scarcely offered.
In 1704, the Maritime Powers had transported their candidate for the Spanish throne, Charles II, Archduke of Austria, to Portugal. In the autumn he was take to Valencia where a siege of Barcelona was underway. A skilful assault led by the Earl of Peterborough swiftly secured a major part of the fortifications. The rest of the city quickly gave in. Charles was well received by the inhabitants by capturing the remaining major towns in Valencia thus bringing the whole Province under the control of Charles and the Allies.
