The Campaign of 1709, AR Medal, 1709, by P. H. Müller, ANNA • D • G • MAG • BR • FR • ET • HIB • REGINA •, draped bust left, rev. TVRRIS • CASTRA • MONTES VICTI •, Mars, leaning on a shield decorated with a view of the battle of Malplaquet, and Hercules leaning on a shield having a view of MONS, are seated upon a pedestal decorated with a view of TORNICK. Fame places a castral and two laurel crowns above, plain edge, 43mm, 25.50g (Eimer -; MI ii 366/207), a couple of nailmarks to the obverse, otherwise with an attractive lustre and cabinet toning to dark grey surfaces, struck on a delicately thin flan and thus adding to the impressive quality of the intricate detail when in hand, a handsome extremely fine and very rare, only two traced by this cataloguer on CoinArchives.
Hercules and Mars indicate that force and military skill produced the results of this campaign. The legend is therefore somewhat a play on words. The Tower means Tournay, the entrenchments are those at Malplaquet and the mountains are only to be found in the name of Mons. These victories, as it was expected, would lead to general peace, however, this was not to be the case.

Estimate: £1200 - £1500
