The Allied army on the Spanish mainland was commanded by Generals Stanhope and Starenberg and the rival claimants to the Spanish throne were also present. The allied cavalry, led by Stanhope, made an impetuous charge against the Spanish and put them to flight. The medal depicts the decisive moment when General James [1st Earl] Stanhope seized the bridle of General Amezega's horse, in order to deliver him a fatal sword blow.
