PRINCEPS • LVD • SER • M • B • REGIS • SOROR •, cuirrased and draped bust left, 1712 below, plain edge, 52mm, 68.04g (Eimer 454; MI ii 388/241; Harding 49 this medal), small pitted mark to the neck of Princess Louisa, otherwise attractively cabinet toned and with a flashy lustre, bold extremely fine and rare.
In 1712 Princess Louisa, the sister of James the Old Pretender, died of smallpox. This medal was struck to commemorate the Princess and also, perhaps, to help keep the Stuart cause alive.
