Peace of Utrecht, AR Medal, 1713, by J. Croker, ANNA • D : G : MAG : BRI : FR : ET • GIB : REG :, laureate and draped bust left, rev. COMPOSITIS VENERANTVR ARMIS, Britannia seated left, holding spear and olie branch, ships and farming scene beyond, MDCCXIII in exergue, plain edge, 60mm, 75.78g (Eimer 458; MI ii 399/256; van Loon V 230; Harding 45 this medal), some nailmarks to face and fields, otherwise with attractive dark grey surfaces and flashy blue toning, about extremely fine.
In an effort to find peace, the Congress of Utrecht opened in January 1712, and while it was still in session, French forces retook Bouchain, Quesnoy and Douai. This forced most of the remaining members of the Alliance to agree what terms they could with the French. Alone among the Allies, the German States fought on, but were forced to agree peace terms one year later.
Estimate: £500 - £700
