Order of the Bath Revived, AR Medal, 1725, by J. Croker, GEORGIVS • D • G • MAG • BR • FR • ET • HIB • REX • F • D •, laureate bust right, rev. SPES • ALTERA •, standing figure of Prince William, facing, dressed as Knight of the Bath, ORD • EQVIT • BALN • REST • ET • INSIG • AVCT • MDCCXXV • in exergue in three lines, plain edge, 46mm, 45.44g (Eimer 501; MI ii 463/75), with attractive and highly lustrous surfaces, vibrantly toned in hues of ochre and blue, the detail to high relief areas fully present, a practically as struck example of a charming and ever popular design, scarcely offered.
After the coronation of Charles II, the Order of the Bath fell into neglect until 1725, when King George I revived it, enacting a new book of Statutes and augmenting its decorations. Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721-1765), third son of George II, at the age of only four, was the first Knight to be bestowed the Order. The most Honourable Order of the Bath was formally constructed under Henry IV in 1399, a ceremony which unlike its modern revival involved the bestowed Knights being bathed. The most recent Ceremony of the Oath and Installation at Westminster Abbey on 24 May 2022 was attended by His Majesty the King, and members of the Spink Coin, Medal and Special Commissions departments.
Estimate: £1200 - £1500
