George II and the Royal Family, AR Medal, 1732, by J. Croker and J.S. Tanner, GEORGIVS • II • REX • ET • CAROLINA • REGINA •, draped busts facing, the King armoured, MDCCXXII in exergue, rev. FELICITAS • IMPERII, busts of the seven royal children, FREDERICVS P: WALLIAE. GVLIELMVS. D: CVMBRIAE. ANNA. AMELIA. CAROLINA. MARIA. LVDOVICA. PRINCIPES. in exergue in six lines, plain edge, 69mm, 117.13g (Eimer 528; MI ii 500/47; Woolf 44; Harding 62 this medal), small scratch to queen's bust and face, nailmark to Prince of Wales' cheek, otherwise all portraits with the most pleasing details, lustrous and with cabinet toning, extremely fine.
This medal represents the Hanoverian response to the Stuart family's claim of Succession. Ordered by George II, this medal was intended to provide a suitable gift for distinguished visitors. In reality it might also have served as a direct riposte to the earlier Jacobite medal with its rather mysterious legends. In contrast, George's children are all specifically named.
Estimate: £1200 - £1500
