Sikh Empire, Ranjit Singh (VS 1856-1896 /1799-1839AD), Sri Amritsar Mint (off flan), Silver Rupee, VS 185x (1802 AD), "Nanak Shahi" Couplet, Kangha symbol, Obv: Persian legend "Sikka zad bar har do Alam Fazle Sachha sahib ast, Fateh tegh-e-Guru Gobind Singh Shah Nanak Wahab ast" with "Kangha" (Comb) symbol, Rev: Persian legend "zarb Sri Amritsar jiyo" off flan at the top, "Takht Akal Bakht", leaf and Vikram Samvat year 185x, 10.96g, 22.02mm, (Herrli 01.07.04/ Gurprit Singh 01.26.05/ KM 20.2b/c), test marks, about extremely fine, Exceedingly Rare.
Note: A separate 'Kangha' symbol is placed between the Persian Letter'Guru and Bind of Gobind' in reverse. Persian word Akal is noted on the other side.
Ranjit Singh took control of Amritsar in AD 1805 (VS1862). It is believed by historians that he commemorated this victory by introducing the religious symbol of 'Kangha' (Comb)on his coin. It is a part of the five 'Ks' or essentials in the Sikh Religion prescribed by Guru Gobind Singh, the creator of the Khalsa. It became a customary practice for Lahore Durbar to send the donation of the first minted coins of any new series to Akal Takht Sahib in Amritsar.
