Spain, gold proof medal, (1970), inauguration of the Simon Bolivar monument in the Parque del Oeste de Madrid by the Instituto de Cultura Hispanica. 10.42 grams; 28mm. Obverse with uniformed bust of Bolivar below legend SIMON BOLIVAR 1783-1830; reverse with Bolivar on horse, holding sword handle up to the sun, with frosted silhouette of South America in the background, legend EL LIBERTADOR to left, tiny hallmark and fineness marking 917 (22K gold) at bottom. Brightly lustrous UNC with bagmarks and light hairlines, also a curious strike-through-fiber error between EL and LIB.
