Sampson on obverse, naval soldiers on reverse, SANTIAGO DE CUBA / JULY 2 in exergue), the edge engraved with GEORGE A HEWITT F. 2d. C. (the seaman this medal was presented to). The USS Indiana shelled the harbor of San Juan, Puerto Rico on May 12th, then joined in the blockade of Santiago de Cuba in late June before playing a role on July 3rd in the decisive Battle of Santiago de Cuba.
