GREAT BRITAIN. George III, 1760-1820. Pattern 5 Guineas, 1773.
S-3723; Fr-350; KM-Pn52; Wilson & Rasmussen-77. Finely detailed laureate bust right, intricate hair details. Rv. Crowned garnished arms. Engraved by John Tanner. Plain edge. Rarity-4 in W&R. The final Five Guineas type in the entire denomination series and produced as a pattern only. This is most impressively engraved with semi-high relief hair details rising majestically aloft the partly reflective surfaces. The reverse Exhibits some collar disruption at 1 o'clock as made. There are linear polishing lines on the flan, prior to striking, that are visible under a glass. Overall, the coin projects glistening surfaces along with its natural color. A stellar milled English gold rarity of the first magnitude. This realized $52,800.00 at the 1985 50th Anniversary Stack's sale in a market not noted as especially strong. The RARE and choice George III coinage performed very well in the Law core collection sale at the ANA and we Expect strong bidding attention for this lovely Five Guineas; off the market now for nearly three decades. NGC PF-64.

Ex: Thos. H. Law Collection being sold on behalf of his alma mater the University of Texas at Austin; previously from Stack's October 24, 1985 50th Anniversary Sale, lot 1150, the Zurich Collection; reportedly Ex: Wayte Raymond, Charles Wormser and J.P. Morgan.
