ITALY. Genoa. Battista Fregoso, Doge of Genoa (1478-1483) Cast Copper Alloy "Crocodile and Trochilus" Medal, ND (1479-1483).
42.8 mm; 38.3 gms. Kress-201; Pollard-225. By Battista D'Elia Da Genova-active ca. 1480. Bust of Fregoso to right wearing cap. Inscription around "BAPT. FVLGOS. IANVE LIGVR. Q. DVX. PETR. DV. FIL."; Reverse: Trochilus (plover) bird flying into the open mouth of a crocodile where it will feed on bits of meat left on the base of the reptiles teeth; inscription "PECVLIARES AVDACIA. ET. VICTVS" around. The specimen described by Pollard was noted to be thick, but this one of lesser weight and typical thickness. The surfaces especially on the obverse are heavily chased with but a few small planchet flaws. The patina varies from a light olive brown on the high points to a deeper, richer chocolate brown around the devices and in the protected areas. VERY FINE.
