ATTICA. Athens. AR Tetradrachm (17.15 gms) ca. 454-431 B.C.
Svornos-pl. 10#8; cf.Seltman-A299/P379; Starr-Group-V.B. Helmeted head of Athena right; Reverse: Owl standing right, head facing, olive sprig and crescent moon behind, all within incuse square. A remarkably well made coin with sharp strike and crisp finish. Well centered on both sides, especially so on the reverse where all aspects of the die are visible within a deep strike, nicely framed by the edges of the flan. Excellent metal quality with fine details that place this as one of the most well preserved Starr group owls this cataloger has had the privilege of holding. Lustrous and choice, produced during the pinnacle of artistic style of Athenian coinage. Exquisite, a truly world class example that would complement even the finest of collections. CHOICE NEARLY MINT STATE.
